Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are finally just two weeks away and anticipation and excitement for their release are at an all-time high. The Pokemon Company has been steadily releasing more information for the games as we get closer, including revealing some new Pokemon. That being said, there are still a few questions looming over our heads ahead of release. So let’s talk about them.
1. How many Pokémon will there be?
Of course, we need to get the obvious out of the way, but how many Pokémon will be in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? Based on recent Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokemon games such as Pokemon Sword and Shield, which had about 400 Pokemon in play at release, 81 were brand new for the generation.
In an interview with Junichi Masuda, one of the producers of Pokemon Sword and Shield, a few years ago, he said it would take up too much storage space to try to fit every Pokemon in the franchise into a single game.
With the Switch games, their focus has been more on the overall quality of the open-world experience than trying to include them all at the expense of quality. It’s hard to say how many Pokémon Scarlet/Violet will appear at launch, but 400-500 could be a safe bet this time.
2. Will Titan Pokemon have an endgame role?
In Pokemon Sword and Shield, Gigantomax Pokemon was introduced as a raid boss fight that players can take apart during gameplay. Eventually, these battles became the endgame experience for various rewards, leveling up, or trying to hunt Shiny Pokemon. Pokemon Scarlet/Violet introduces a similar experience with Titan Pokemon, where players battle giant versions of Pokemon. However, this is not to be confused with Gigantomax.
Not only was Gigantomax a phenomenon that players would fight, but Gigantomax could also use it on himself and his Pokemon. For example, it can be considered as a combat mechanic similar to Mega Evolution. Titan Pokemon appears to be just a raid battle and nothing that players can use for themselves as Scarlet/Violet introduces its own unique battle mechanic, Terastallize. We have minimal information about Titan Pokemon and their importance to the game, so we’ll have to wait for the game’s release to be sure whether Titan Pokemon will be the endgame experience or not.
3. How strong will Terastallise be?
Speaking of Terastalize, we’re curious to see just how strong it actually is. Mega Evolution changed the franchise while it was still available for numerous reasons. Not only did it give the designated Pokemon a massive boost in stats, but it also changed its appearance and even gave them a new type in some cases. To this day, for example, Mega Rayquaza is considered the strongest Pokémon in the entire franchise.
Terastalliz seems to work similarly, changing the Pokemon’s appearance and sometimes changing its typing entirely. But how far will that go and how strong is a Pokemon in the Terastallise state? We won’t know for sure until the game releases.
4. How many Legendary Pokémon will there be?
By now everyone has seen the Legendary Pokemon box cover for Scarlet and Violet, Koraidon, and Miraidon. But are they the only new Legendary Pokemon we’ll see for the game upon release? In Sword and Shield, the game only had the box covers Legendaries, Zacian and Zamazenta, and a third hidden Legendary Pokemon, Eternatus when the game was originally released. We wouldn’t see any new Legendaries until the later released DLC for the game.
Hopefully Scarlet and Violet will have several new Legendaries for trainers to find and capture as they are always exciting to see throughout the game.
5. Will Scarlet and Violet have DLC?
In terms of DLC, will Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have DLC like Sword and Shield? Whether the inclusion of DLC was planned on the rise of Covid-19 or all along is still being determined. Sword and Shield revealed two DLCs for the games, the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra, which included new areas and Pokémon for players to explore and catch. With that in mind, there’s still a chance Scarlet and Violet will get some form of DLC to keep the game relevant until the next Pokémon game releases.
6. Will the games have a coherent story?
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet introduce a new way to play the game by giving players three ways to play the story. Players can choose which path they want and eventually go back to clear the others as well. There’s Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street.
The path of the Victory Road is uncomplicated; Just like in a normal Pokémon game, players can take on all eight Gym Badges to eventually become the champion of the region. The difference, however, is that players can fight at any time and in any gym. There is no set path; It’s simply up to the trainer to decide which arena to fight next.
The Path of Legends is an adventure that pits players against Titan Pokémon in search of a legendary herb, Urba Mystica. This occurs in wild areas rather than cities, similar to what happened in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.
Finally, the Starfall Street path pits players against the game’s evil team, Team Starfall. Players will fight against their leaders or large groups of them, eventually finding their way to their boss. Few things are known about how Starfall Street will truly pan out. Nonetheless, our concern is how each path will coalesce into a coherent story. Going different ways is fine, but if they don’t come together into a coherent story, then there’s no point in going separate ways in the first place.
7. When will players get access to buildable Pokémon?
Throughout the marketing for Scarlet and Violet, numerous trailers have shown players being able to ride the box’s Legendary Pokemon, Koraidon, and Miraidon. However, it has yet to be clarified “when” players will be able to do so. Does this mean that trainers will face the Legendaries early in the game? Or is it a feature that comes after players have completed the main story? More importantly, are they the only buildable Pokemon? Pokemon Legends: Arceus included several buildable Pokemon for different scenarios, like flying or surfing. However, Koraidon and Miraidon have shown that they can do just about anything. The question of when players will have access to buildable Pokémon will not be answered until the game releases.
8. How does online multiplayer work?
A new feature of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is the ability to play online multiplayer. This means trainers can connect to the internet and play with three other people to play and explore the games. However, more is needed to know just how extensive this feature really is. Pokemon has dabbled in multiplayer activities before, including raid battles in Sword and Shield, but being able to roam the world with others is the next step for the franchise. Unfortunately, we won’t know until the release of the game how this will really play out.
9. Will the Global Trade Station return?
Speaking of multiplayer, Pokemon games have always had the option of battling or trading with other trainers, either locally or over the internet. However, in Pokemon Sword and Shield, the ability to fight or trade has been changed to allow players to signal when they want to fight or trade with each other. Fighting among themselves became much more accessible, but trading became increasingly difficult; If a player were trying to look for a single Pokemon, they would have to hope that another retailer has it.
However, this issue would be resolved when the Global Trading System (GTS) returns. The GTS was an online feature from early Pokemon games like Diamond and Pearl and Black and White, where players can trade with others and choose exactly the Pokemon they’re looking for, as long as they meet the requirements of the Pokemon on offer. This was a great feature from early Pokemon games that we hope will return in Scarlet and Violet.
10. Will there be a new Eevee evolution?
Last but not least, to top it off, can we finally get a new Eeveelution? The last time we saw a new evolution for Eevee was the fairy version Sylveon with Pokemon X and Y in 2013. There are currently eight Eeveelutions with ten more typings to choose from. Even a new evolution for Eevee would do, as at this rate it’s definitely overdue. While nothing has been confirmed for Scarlet and Violet, there could always be a surprise for players when the game releases in two weeks.
While we’re still confused by the questions above, that doesn’t change our excitement for the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet release. The games are scheduled to be released in two weeks on Friday, November 18th. Be sure to check out our latest Pokemon Scarlet and Violet updates, including the reveal of a new Pokemon, Greavard!
