Steve Nicol has urged Liverpool and Chelsea transfer target Ousmane Dembele to ‘show up for training on time’ before he can think of a move from Barcelona. as he told ESPN.
The 25-year-old is out of contract at the Nou Camp in the summer and there is no sign he will sign a new contract yet, with Liverpool legend Nicol finding it “strange” that “so many teams” want to sign him.
Well, Anfield and Stamford Bridge are two parties who have expressed interest in the striker’s services. Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel worked with him at Borussia Dortmund.
Considering Dembele is or will be a free transfer, it’s understandable why clubs are queuing to add him to their ranks with no transfer fee involved.
But the way the France international has been behaving at the Nou-Camp hasn’t exactly pleased Nicol, who thinks he should sign a new contract with Barcelona and put himself in order.
“I think he should show up for practice on time,” said Nicol. “Then get to meetings on time and put your head down. Do what he hasn’t done at Barcelona for four and a half years and that’s good to play.
“It must be chilling for any team to look at Dembele and see the five years he spent at Barcelona, where suddenly, three months before his contract expires, we see what he is capable of. And everyone stands up and takes note.
“That must worry me. When you’re paying a guy over £150,000 a week you need to know what you’re getting. They don’t want to play with players.
“So I find it strange that so many teams are chasing him, at the same time I stay in Barcelona when I’m him. The problem he has there is that he wants more money and they are not prepared for it because they don’t have it. If he has any sense, stay there and produce what he produced in the second half of the season.”
WHO SIGNED DEMBELE?
There was even talk in January that Dembele might be heading for the exit door as Barcelona are desperate for him to either move somewhere else or sign a new contract – neither did he.
Unsurprisingly, Dembele struggled in Barcelona colors ahead of the second half of last season but gave up his best to the last… that is if he leaves on a free transfer.
In his 21 La Liga games, he provided 13 assists, only 15 of which were starts and 11 of the assists came from January.
Either way, on the one hand he’s shown what he’s capable of and why Barcelona paid £136m for him in 2017 (BBC Sport)but then again, is he someone you can trust?
Well, time will tell for the scintillating winger because when the teams at the top do they won’t hesitate to put that big deal on the table for him.
