Lucas Torreira was disappointed that a move to Fiorentina fell through but insists there is “no chance” he will play for Arsenal in the Premier League next season, Speaks to El Telegrafo.

Torreira has to be felt.

Not long ago, this yapping little ankle-chewer was hailed as the solution to all Arsenal’s midfield problems. Some claimed the long-awaited heir to the long-dead but much-missed Gilberto Silva.

And then came Unai Emery and his amazing “Number Ten” experiment. Afterwards the most unforgettable time with Atletico Madrid. And just as Torreira seemed to be getting his career back on track, any possibility that the Uruguay international could earn a permanent move to the Stadio Artemio Franchi evaporated in a puff of smoke and a wave of frustration.

Arsenal outsider Lucas Torreira is in limbo

“Last season was tough. So now I want to think about relaxing with my family. I would have liked to have stayed at Fiorentina but that wasn’t possible due to various issues,” explains Torreira, who once cost Arsenal £26m but is now worth around half of that.

“That is why we are looking for new solutions. I’ve suffered a lot already.”

Arsenal and Fiorentina reportedly shook hands in a £13m deal around the turn of the year. But then La Viola was beginning to get colder feet than Frodo Baggins in a snowstorm in Antarctica while trying to haggle for a lower fee. A bid of £6million was, as you might expect, repelled with some derision by the Gunners (Gianluca di Marzio).

There was also the issue of Torreira’s £65,000-a-week wages. As the 26-year-old’s agent pointed out, Fiorentina only planned to offer him £45,000 a week.

So what next? Where next?

“My idea is to play in Italy or Spain,” adds Torreira, translated by TMW. “There’s no chance I’ll stay at Arsenal.”
