Jason Cundy told it talkSPORT that Roberto Firmino will not feature in Liverpool’s line-up even if Jurgen Klopp makes a move before the Reds visit Manchester City.
The former Chelsea defender believes the arrival of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz and the pair’s influence at Anfield has pushed Firmino back in Klopp’s pecking order. Now Cundy believes the Brazilian will struggle to get on the pitch for the Merseyside natives.
It was a very different prospect for Firmino two seasons ago when he, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the first choice. Now Klopp Mane can exchange with Jota, who can also appear centrally. Diaz can also be used as a center forward or on both wings.
Diaz has been an instant hit at Liverpool since joining Klopp’s side from Porto £37.5m, plus £12.5m in add-ons, in January. He has three goals and one assist in 13 games in all competitions so far. Jota has now scored 20 goals and created three over 41 games.
Only Salah started the last weekend of Premier League games with more top goals than Jota. The Egyptian scored 20 to 14 of the Portuguese. Firmino has only scored five.
Firmino doesn’t come in Liverpool XI “even if you’ve made a move,” says Cundy
Firmino is hoping to help Liverpool win at Manchester City on Sunday and move to the top of the Premier League table. But he has only started nine of his 17 top flight games this season. Of his five league goals so far this season, he also scored three at Watford on 16 October.
With Klopp available alongside Salah and Mane Jota and Diaz, Cundy has major concerns over where Firmino will cost – who £29 million in 2015 – is in Liverpool’s pecking order.
“18 months to two years ago most if not all Liverpool fans will tell you he was the link between midfield [and attack],” he called. “He drops deep, pulls out defenders, puts those balls in, has Salah and Mane get on their bike and it worked brilliantly.
“Since Jota came in, Firmino hasn’t found his way back into the team. And since Diaz came on he’s added another dimension to the point that Firmino was pushed straight back in the minute… He doesn’t come in at Liverpool’s best team even if you make a substitution, for me.
