To say that Alexandre Lacazette is having a hard time finding next season at Arsenal would be an understatement.

With four Premier League goals and not even a free-play shot in over 1,000 minutes, Lacazette’s goalscoring form was a major problem for Arsenal in what is now becoming their desperate bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

While Lacazette’s liaison skills have been invaluable to the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, there’s no denying the Gunners need a real forward to lead the line next season.

With that in mind, who are some of the players Arsenal have come close to signing in past transfer windows, and how much has the north London side bottled it up by not working hard enough to try and find a world-class one? -Sign strikers to lead the line?

Kylian Mbappe

Arsene Wenger’s last 7 Arsenal signings: where are they now?

Kylian Mbappe’s breakthrough season at AS Monaco was something of a revelation and Arsenal were surprisingly one of the leading sides to sign the French sensation in the summer of 2017.

With Arsene Wenger revealed that he almost signed it now £166 million PSG star on a free transfer when he was a youngster and met with the striker in the transfer window before Mbappé’s move to Paris, Arsenal were on the verge of signing one of the best players in world football.

Luis Suárez

Arsenal’s transfers under Wenger have often been smart, to say the least, and when Luis Suarez was revealed to have had a release clause worth around £40m at Liverpool in 2013, the legendary French manager was started an offer for the £40m striker… and £1.

The infamous transfer offer was predictably quickly rejected by Liverpool and Suarez has become a freak in the Premier League this season, scoring a paltry 31 goals in 33 games and earning the attacker an £80million move to FC Barcelona.

Gonzalo Higuain

Arsenal’s bid for Suarez was inspired in large part by their failed attempt to sign Gonzalo Higuain even the Guardian reports that a £23million move was as good as agreed. However, no such transfer came about.

Talks eventually collapsed and Higuain went to Napoli instead, where the Argentine forward broke several records for the Serie A side before making a move to the Italian league for Juventus, where the forward’s form eventually waned.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Mbappe, Suarez, Higuain, things can’t get any worse for Arsenal, can they? Step forward Cristiano Ronaldo, quite literally the most accomplished player in professional football history and winner of five Ballon d’Ors, second-placed to Lionel Messi, another player reportedly on the verge of joining the Gunners.

Just like Mbappe, Wenger has previously explained that he came close to signing the Portuguese phenomenon at a young age before Manchester United eventually won the race for the attacker and the rest, they say, is history.

In other news, Gerrard called the £30m ace “fantastic”, now Aston Villa are reportedly ready to sell him already
