The 49ers have had many injuries under Kyle Shanahan. They seem to be doing it again. With quarterback Trey Lance and running back Elijah Mitchell already out indefinitely, San Francisco lost perhaps its biggest name in Week 3 to the Broncos Sunday night. Left tackle Trent Williams was eliminated in the third quarter of the game and coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters After that, the All-Pro lineman likely suffered an ankle sprain that could sideline him for weeks.

A year after landing a record $138 million contract extension, Williams, 34, hobbled away about halfway through the third quarter after suffering a leg pain. He had previously blocked Broncos pass rusher Bradley Chubb when 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo accidentally fell back from his own end zone for safety. Medical staff prepared a trolley to possibly transport Williams back to the dressing room, but the lineman eventually walked away with help.

Williams was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game, which is usually a sign an injury is more serious, and replaced by sophomore Jaylon Moore. Further testing will confirm Williams’ exact diagnosis, but a sprained ankle would likely put him out of action for four to six weeks on average.

That would potentially be bad news for Shanahan’s offense, which relies heavily on the line to establish strong running play and keep Garoppolo alive. With Mitchell and fellow running back Tyrion Davis-Price injured, the 49ers have opted to back Jeff Wilson Jr. as the primary ball carrier while also handing out carries to receiver Deebo Samuel. Williams, on the other hand, is widely regarded as one of, if not the, best left tackle in the NFL.
