Kemoko Turay pursued the midfield position while with the Indianapolis Colts.

One of the strongest groups on the San Francisco 49ers list looks to be getting even better with the team’s latest move in freelance company.

The 49ers made a knack for this as the reason for signing the former Indianapolis Colts player during free agency time. First, San Francisco and general manager John Lynch brought the former Colts’ special and safety teams to George Odum, then the 49ers signed former Indianapolis and Tennessee Titans WR Marcus Johnson earlier this month.

Now, San Francisco is bringing in a new passer in the form of left-back/wing-back Kemoko Turay. Internal NFL media Mike Garafolo reported that the agency representing Turay notified him of the move on April 14.

“# 49ers agreed to a one-year deal with DL Kemoko Turay, according to his agents at @SPORTSTARSNYC,” Garafolo tweeted. “The former second-round picker is about to launch the career-highest 5.5 bags of his career last season with #Colts. ”

San Francisco boasts a deep defence led by the likes of Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa, but the most exciting thing about Turay is what he’s been able to do under coach Kris Kocurek at the back. reign in 2022.

Turay is about to hit a high note with Colts

As Garafolo mentioned, Turay has a career-high 5.5 bags in 2021. It’s not exactly a monster season, but it’s encouraging to see the passer on the balance line rather than in step down.

Turay attended Rutgers in college, where his 14.5-year career and his impressive 6’5″ and 248-pound frame caught the attention of the NFL. Colts drafted Turay in second round of the 2018 NFL draft, and he hung four sacks in his first year according to Pro Football Reference.

However, an ankle injury sidelined him for much of the 2019 and 2020 seasons. In those two years, he counted just 2.5 sacks and appeared in 11 games in total.

Why his 5.5 sacks in 2021 are so impressive is the number of snaps he hits that number. PFR says he played only 27% of defensive snaps (224 snaps) of the 13 games he’s played, which means he’s been sacked once every 40.7 snaps.

In a word, Turay has averaged 86 tackles each in his previous three seasons. To further emphasize how impressive that pocket count is, Bosa is the 49ers’ top passer and his career tally is 68.5.

49ers DL Coach Get another weapon

Since their debut in 2019, Kocurek and the 49ers have become masters of sack technique from backup players and maximizing output. Kocurek is part of the reason why Bosa is still as good as he is, but he can offer a lot more value when you look at the backups.

Samson Ebukam and Arden Key, both considered secondary edge attackers in 2021, combine for 11 sacks behind Bosa. Having effective passing passes means more than relying on the team’s stars, and Kocurek is adept at breaking sacks with his depth.

Just ask Kerry Hyder Jr., the 30-year-old defender returned to the 49ers after a year with the Seattle Seahawks, where he ranked only 1.5 times after 8.5 caps for San Francisco and Kocurek in 2021. 2020 marks the second time Hyder has excelled with Kocurek, as the pair worked together on Hyder’s only other notable season, when he had eight sacks with the Detroit Lions in 2016.

Kocurek’s record speaks for itself, and after witnessing what Turay did as a substitute last year with the Colts, 49ers fans should be delighted at the prospect of the 26-year-old joining the ranks. join the team.
