Police found five children in a home after the couple died in the backyard in an apparent murder-suicide in the early hours of Christmas Day in Texas.

Police reported the scene at Daun Street, where the couple were found dead on the front lawn. After entering the home, they found five uninjured children, ranging from 7 to 16 years old, the Harris County sheriff’s office said in a statement on the website. Twitter Saturday morning.

According to police, the husband has been identified as Arsenio Gonzalez, 45, and his wife, Maria Gonzalez, 42.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement: “The wife showed signs of severe trauma and the husband appeared to have committed a self-inflicted shooting.”

The five children did not see or hear anything related to the murder-suicide, Harris County Sergeant Greg Pinkins told KHOU television.

Pinkins told the news station that the shooting happened after the couple returned from a Christmas party they had attended earlier in the day.

Delegates are currently investigating the situation and are speaking with family members present at the gathering in an effort to gather more information.

Meanwhile, Child Protective Services is looking after five children and working to be able to place them with other family members.

Several shootings have been reported across the country this holiday season. During Thanksgiving weekend, a teenager accidentally shot dead a 5-year-old relative in Minnesota. Police say the teen was “trying to make a social media video” and that he was “handling a gun” at the time of the shooting.

Gun-related incidents on the rise in 2021 across the country, according to a report The US News report is cited by the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive. The organization defines fatal shootings as those in which four or more victims and one person die, other than the shooter.

The number of fatal shootings increased 55% in the first half of 2021 from last year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
