Many games don’t get the attention they deserve when they are released. A variety of factors contribute, but finding an underrated gem is usually a cool experience. Below are a few games you may have missed but should check out.
The best underrated games to play today
Sleeping Dogs (2012)
Players enter a beautifully crafted open world set in Hong Kong in Sleeping Dogs, a spiritual sequel to True Crime. Aside from its Hong Kong setting, the game also differed from other open-world games with its martial arts, which the Arkham series popularized. Sleeping Dogs is a steal for anyone who wasn’t aware of the open world genre’s popularity today and how much a diamond this game is
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021)
Guardians of the Galaxy was doomed to not getting the attention it deserved. Its publisher, Square Enix, also released Marvel’s Avengers, a game that didn’t do well and it seemed like all that bad press from Avengers was hurting Guardians of the Galaxy. Though it received high ratings and made it to the Pro Game Guides Staffs coveted Games of the Year 2021, it largely went unnoticed. It has an excellent soundtrack, tactical combat that is fun, and a story worthy of a novel.

Dragon Dogma (2012)
Dragon’s Dogma is an action role-playing game in a high-fantasy setting. Before the term Souls-like was even coined, Dragon’s Dogma offered an experience similar to Dark Souls. Despite this, the story was dull and lackluster, which turned many players off. Dragon’s Dogma was also very difficult, but fun to play, which would be enough to make up for its bad storyline.
Sherlock Holmes Chapter One (2021)
It’s a shame that such a polished mystery detective game was released without much notice. Sherlock Holmes Chapter One by Frogwares tells the origin story of the character who appears in numerous of the studio’s games. There are many cases with multiple outcomes, riddles and mysteries. It could have been because Sherlock Holmes didn’t do enough marketing or the community was burned out. Whether you’re a mysteries fan or a Sherlock Holmes fan, you should check out Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.
The action role-playing game Vampyr takes place in the year 1919. The protagonist is a doctor who has just been turned into a vampire and now has to try to control his hunger by helping the living. You can only get stronger by feeding on other characters. Characters in the game’s world are all unique and you can sacrifice most of them to make your character stronger. Despite its relatively low production values, its supernatural abilities and atmospheric take on London make it gripping.
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (2015)
With Ubisoft’s annual Assassin’s Creed releases and the broken state of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, fans were growing weary of the franchise. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate came out after Unity and was polished, funny, and actually had a very interesting story. The stealth action game takes players back to the industrial revolution in London and spotlights twin assassins with two different playstyles. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was an improvement over Unity in many ways, but it still carried Unity’s shadow. Ubisoft eventually changed the entire formula of the series, but Syndicate deserved to be much more popular.
