A 1991 cult-classic teen comedy is making its way to streaming

Christina Applegate’s first significant role.

For those of you who are fans of Christina Applegate, you’ll be thrilled to hear that her 1991 coming-of-age comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is absolutely killing it streaming.

According to Flix Patrol, the film has entered the top 10 on Hulu in the US and even managed to hit #2 on November 11th. In the film, Applegate plays a 17-year-old named Sue. who takes on the role of housewife after her elderly babysitter dies inexplicably. Despite its morbid humor and modest box office earnings, the film achieved cult status and was compared to other coming-of-age films such as Home Alone.

The comedy was Applegate’s first starring role, having previously guest-starred on several television projects including 21 Jump Street (1988) and MADtv (1996), and even hosted Saturday Night Live. According to the film’s writers, Applegate’s character and the film’s premise were inspired by Tom Cruise’s famous ’80s film Risky Business, in which a young high school student is propelled into adulthood.

Alongside Applegate, the film stars Joanna Cassidy, who film fanatics may remember, played the replicant Zhora Salome in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Other notable co-stars include Keith Hogan (Toy Soldiers), John Getz (Doom Patrol), and Joshua Charles (The Good Wife, Dead Poets Society).

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is currently streaming on Hulu.
