The fifth in the 2002 Scorpion King series is making waves on streaming services.

The Scorpion King: Book of Souls is the 5th in a franchise that grew out of the success of the classic Brendan Fraser series The Mummy. Over four years after its direct-to-video release in 2018, the final installment in the saga is booming on streaming platforms, making Hulu’s top 10 most-streamed titles.

Book of Souls follows the story of Mathayus of Akkad, the fabled demigod warrior who is reluctantly drawn into a fight to prevent a sword with the power to give its wielder dominion over the world from falling into the wrong hands device. The film, which does not feature any of the original cast and only preserves the character of Mathayus as a conduit to the universe, was pulled from theaters and went straight to DVD due to many problems with the initial recording.

The Scorpion King franchise started in 2002 and starred Dwayne Johnson in the title role, stemming from his appearance in the original Mummy series. The Rock, who rose to stardom in the years following the film’s release, did not return for subsequent sequels, which owed much of their existence to his initial role as a sword-wielding warrior.

Fans of the original episode know that much of the film’s appeal comes from the Gravitas that Johnson provided. Refreshed interest in the franchise has us dreaming of a world where he will reprise the role. With Brendan Fraser’s triumphant return to the spotlight, we might even be able to imagine a scenario where the two revisit the Mummy universe together.

Until then, all 5 Scorpion King movies are available to stream on Hulu, with Chapter 5 paving the way for renewed interest.
