Another problem with Joe Gomez’s fitness somewhat clouded Liverpool’s win at Southampton on Tuesday night.
Liverpool moved a point clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings with a narrow win at St Mary’s.
Gomez, who joined the Reds in 2015, left the pitch just before half-time with a suspected ankle injury.
Jurgen Klopp confirmed after the game that the 24-year-old defender was still in pain and his former Merseyside team-mate Adam Lallana admitted it would be “absolutely tragic” if the player was left on the touchline for a period .
With Liverpool having a Champions League final on May 28, now is not the time for Klopp to lose any of his players.
And a leading medical expert has hinted on Twitter that he will miss the final against Real Madrid in Paris if his suspicions are correct, after revealing a likely prognosis of three weeks.
dr Rajpal Brar, a US-based physical therapist, tweeted:
If true, yes, it’s certainly bad news for Liverpool – and the player himself.
Gomez might not have played anyway as he is just an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold but he is another defender Klopp could have used if he had to protect a game against the Spanish champions on Saturday.
Gomez’s fitness woes have been well documented over the years and while this rivals any of his previous ones in terms of duration, not being available for the Champions League final could hurt him immensely.
