A man arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer suddenly dies in his cell

A man has died after being arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer in northern New South Wales.

Richmond Police District officers were called to a showground on Summerland Way in the casino after a man was reportedly attacked around 11am on Sunday.

Police will claim that when they arrived at the exhibition site, a 48-year-old man allegedly assaulted a police officer.

The man was arrested and taken to the casino police station.

A Critical Incidents team from the State Crime Command Homicide Unit will now investigate all the circumstances surrounding the man’s death (stock image shown).

During detention, the man fell unconscious.

Paramedics from the Police and NSW Ambulance attempted to revive the man but died in custody.

A Critical Incident Team from the State Crime Command’s homicide squad will now investigate all the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

The investigation will be subject to an independent review and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
