A new nuclear debate in Japan

Anything else that Chinese President Xi Jinping thinks he will achieve through succeeding Vladimir Putin, a nuclear Japan is certainly not on the list. However, the global turmoil the pair are causing could cause Tokyo to rethink its security, as former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe demonstrated this weekend.

Abe on Sunday suggested that Japan should consider a nuclear sharing agreement with the United States similar to NATO. Many European countries allow the United States to store American nuclear weapons on their soil as part of NATO deterrence. Japan shelters under the US nuclear umbrella but insists its weapons are located elsewhere.
