A new polar blast will blanket the UK in snow for a white Easter

Brits may have woken up to some much-needed mildness today, but a white Easter celebration will be ushered in tomorrow night when arctic cold sweeps across the country and extends into the April school holidays.
The short-term rise in temperature will melt snow and – combined with heavy rain – will lead to flooding in some areas.
Today’s warmer weather – up to 14C in the south and 10C in the north – comes after Friday’s snow load which brought dangerous conditions in parts of the country and lows of -15C in Scotland.
Snow is expected in northern England tomorrow night and threatens the Midlands on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rain is more likely in the south as mid-week highs are set to fall between 4C and 7C.
Weathermen warned of snow on Easter Sunday April 9, prompting bookmaker Coral to cut the odds for a white Easter from 3/1 to 4/5.

Coral spokesman John Hill said: “There is no risk of Easter eggs melting this year.”
Met Office records show that the last widespread White Easter occurred in 2008. In 2013, however, mercury fell to a then-record low of -12.5°C. But more recently, 2019 rose to a record 24.6°C.
Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond said: “Frost and snow may linger in the forecasts until early April.”
A Met Office forecaster added: “Strong winds will pull colder air across much of the UK. The snow issue is likely to continue.”
Melting snow mixed with a month of rain in two days threatens flooding starting today.

The Met Office expects cloud and rain to spread to the northeast on Saturday, turning to snow over high ground. Temperatures are cold but milder in the west and southwest

A yellow snow and ice warning covers much of northern England and southern Scotland until 6am Sunday
The Environment Agency said: “River and surface water flooding is possible Sunday through Monday for mainly north elevations and parts of the south-west and south-east. Travel may be disrupted.”
March could be colder than winter for the first time in ten years. The temperature so far this month has averaged just 3.6C – about 2.1C below normal – show Met Office figures for central England.
Winter – from December to February – an average of 5°C.
