A wallaby’s head is found impaled on a stick next to Hubert Rivulet

Horrified visitors to an inner-city Australian park have made the disturbing discovery of a decapitated wallaby’s head impaled on a stick next to a footpath.

A local was strolling along the Hobart Rivulet, which flows through Tasmania’s CBD, when they spotted the animal’s head over the weekend.

It is not known how or when the wallaby died, but there is some rot around the jaw.

The resident said this was the second shocking incident of animal cruelty they had seen at the park.

“About a year ago I saw another animal hung in a tree near the entrance to Wynyard Street, but it’s horrible,” they told The Mercury.

Locals are calling for video surveillance systems to be installed along the park to increase security for visitors and deter similar acts.

RSPCA Tasmania CEO Jan Davis agreed that surveillance cameras are needed for the area and called the discovery “troubling”.

“We want these people to stop being stupid, cruel and harming defenseless and iconic native animals,” she told the newspaper.

While Hobart Mayor Anna Reynolds urged anyone who might have information to contact the police.

“The City of Hobart condemns this barbaric, cowardly attack on a harmless native animal,” Ms Reynolds said.

The park runs through Hobart’s CBD and is a habitat for wallabies and platypus

She said City Council staff had been running conservation programs along the Hobart River, maintaining the area and the incident was “isolated.”

Under Tasmania’s Animal Welfare Act, anyone found guilty of serious animal cruelty can be fined up to $33,600 and imprisoned for up to five years.
