Abandoned narco submarine “ghost ship” found off Spain by police authorities

Police have boarded an abandoned narco-submarine “ghost ship” found off the coast of Spain – a day after an underwater vessel was discovered by drug criminals with bodies on board off the coast of Colombia.

Footage shows only the bow of the 50-foot semi-submersible emerging from the waves and authorities inspecting the ship, which was in a near-vertical position.

It is unclear whether narcotics are still on board or whether it was intentionally sunk after the cargo was unloaded.

It was sighted sinking in Vilagarcia de Arousa off the coast of northern Spain’s Pontevedra province in the Galicia region on Monday 13 March.

The Civil Guard said: “Our colleagues from the GEAS (Special Group of Underwater Activities) are trying to recover it.”

Spanish media reported that authorities were struggling to open the hatch to the ship and were working to bring the submarine to the surface despite choppy waters and poor weather conditions.

Underwater images filmed by divers also show the Narco submarine beneath the surface.

Helicopter footage shows government boats swarming around the submarine.

In a statement, Galicia’s local government said: “The government’s sub-delegate in Pontevedra, Maica Larriba, flew this morning to the area where the submarine was located in Vilaxoan, in the Arousa Ria area.

“It also follows the operations carried out in the port by the Spanish Civil Guard and the National Police. The work of the Maritime Safety and Rescue Society is also underway in the area.’

This Narc submarine find comes just days after the Colombian Navy seized a 49-foot submarine with more than 2.6 tons of cocaine and two bodies on board in the Pacific on Sunday.

During the search, authorities also found two survivors who were receiving life-saving medical care on a nearby ship.

Video footage captured the moment officers unloaded the sub and laid out a substantial quantity of cocaine they had seized.

Colombian authorities, who are trying to solve the mystery, believe the two deceased crew members may have been killed by poison gas inhalation.

Spanish media reports that the submarine was one of three seized by Colombian officials – all said to have belonged to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
