It’s no secret that we all feel a little bit more dried out and scaly these days. During that winter in the Northeast, I struggled with bloody noses and aggravated allergies. It got me thinking about what I could do to fix this. What does a humidifier do?

Let’s start by figuring out what a humidifier actually does, because to be honest, I wasn’t even sure what its purpose was until now. “A humidifier releases water vapor into the air to increase humidity, or moisture levels,” says Dr. Tareen.

This is important to note as your skin acts as a barrier that controls water loss and retains moisture. “Excessive or insufficient moisture can have a negative effect on the skin,” she adds.

What does skin look like in low and high humidity environments?

In a place with low humidity, according to Dr. Tareen appear dry, cracked and scaly. On the other hand, in a place with a lot of moisture, your skin can accumulate dirt, oil and allergens more easily. “Living in a place with high humidity can leave skin prone to acne, rosacea, fungal and bacterial skin infections, and allergic reactions,” she says.

What are the benefits of a humidifier for the skin?

We know a humidifier can help with sinus congestion, dry throat and nasal irritation, but what can it do for your complexion? “A humidifier allows us to control the environment, which is a great way to control the skin. So when it comes to providing our indoor air with moisture, this also benefits our largest organ, our skin! “explains Dr. Tareen. “By adding moisture to the air, our skin is able to retain its natural oils and moisture barrier.”

Are There Certain Types Of Humidifiers That Are Best For Skin?

This question was a mystery to me because I have seen both warm mist humidifiers and cool mist humidifiers on the market. dr However, Tareen says she recommends cool-mist humidifiers for her patients. These models emit a cool vapor into your space, unlike warm mist humidifiers which emit a hot vapor.

Do you need to use a humidifier year-round?

It may seem like overkill to fill up a humidifier year-round, which is why Dr. Tareen says they’re especially useful during the colder months when the air is particularly dry.

What else can someone do or use to combat dry skin?

She suggests “applying a cream-based moisturizer like CeraVe or Vanicream to your skin” to improve the hydration it receives overnight. She also mentions hyaluronic acid serums as they do a fantastic job of locking in moisture. “In particularly dry weather, using a ceramide-rich cream moisturizer followed by an occlusive agent like Aquaphor or petroleum jelly can help lock in moisture,” adds Dr. Tareen added.
