Andrea Cambiaso’s agent has responded to speculation linking the rising Serie A star with a £12million move to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur and spoke to him Radio Marta.

Is it a coincidence that Italy have won just two of their last nine regular-time games since Leonardo Spinazzola – arguably the dominating player at Euro 2020 – tore his ligaments in the quarter-final win over Belgium?

Without their daring left-back, the continental champions looked predictable, sluggish and one-dimensional in attack. Additionally, the more defensively oriented Emerson Palmeiri is nowhere near able to duplicate the Roma man’s all-action style on the flanks.

That’s not to say that Italy would have swept aside North Macedonia in last Thursday’s fateful World Cup qualifier had Roberto Mancini turned to Cambiaso instead of Emerson.

But the 21-year-old’s agent Giovanni Bia is adamant that the Genoa flyer needs to be included in the senior squad quickly, going so far as to compare Cambiaso to arguably the best defender of the past 40 years.

“Is he ready for the national team? To be clear, he’s a Paolo Maldini,” says Bia.

“He can play on the right or left as a full-back or in midfield. He is ambidextrous and flexible. I think he should be part of the new (Italy squad). He has vision and quality. Italy needs players like that.

“We don’t have great full-backs at the moment. For me, he will be one of the full-backs for the national team for the next ten years.”

Alfredo Pedulla reported this week that Tottenham, along with Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan, are in contention for Cambiaso’s £12m signature.

Fabio Paratici will know Leicester City’s one-time goal from his Serie A days and Cambiaso is set to become a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

“Away from Genoa?” Bia adds. “We’ll see what happens in June. (Napoli director Cristiano) Giuntoli had been looking for him years ago but couldn’t get him and went to Empoli.

“The boy is being watched by many teams. We need to discuss with the club what is best for everyone. His contract expires in 2023.”
