Adebayo Akinfenwa has slammed those who criticize Trent Alexander-Arnold’s defense by calling the Liverpool man the “best defender in the world”. as he told Sky Sports.
The Wycombe striker added that if Alexander-Arnold did what his critics asked of him and defended as well as he attacked, the 23-year-old from Liverpool would be “the best player in history”.
Nobody doubts the magic, the feeling, the vision, the passing and crossing skills that Alexander-Arnold has from the flanks.
But it’s what he does when he returns that catches the eye of some people and in some cases leads to criticism.
That’s something Liverpool fan and childhood Wycombe forward Akinfenwa isn’t buying as he praised the England international.
“Best full-back in the world,” said Akinfenwa. “I don’t care man, yeah, slightly (biased) because I’m a Liverpool fan.
“You know what the worst is because I’m seeing him more and more. I know people want to talk about his defense. I saw Klopp come out and say, ‘He can defend’. And he can.
“But that’s because he’s so good at going forward. So good that you think “if he can defend himself like that”.
“If he could defend as well as he goes forward, then he would be the best player in history.”
While Alexander-Arnold works his magic on the home stage, he still hasn’t secured a place in England’s XI after so many years.
Depending on who you listen to, many people will have different views on this topic.
On the one hand, it’s the most talented and crowded area of the field, with the likes of Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier competing with TAA of late.
But others will point to Wembley dugout man Gareth Southgate, pointing out that from a tactical perspective he doesn’t have the attacking talent to get the most out of one of today’s finest modern full-backs.
