Alan Shearer blasted the ‘stupid’ call by handing Liverpool and Diogo Jota a penalty in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, as he told Premier League Productions (January 23, 22 at 5:25pm).

The Premier League’s all-time top scorer thinks VAR’s call to award the penalty is ‘ridiculous, wrong, pathetic and stupid’.

After a dominating first-half performance from Liverpool, where they took a 2-0 lead, they were on a solid footing for most of the second half.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Patrick Vieira’s side were looking for an equalizer, before Vicente Guaita appeared to be punished for a foul on Jota.

Video replays showed Jota running into the Crystal Palace keeper, instead of him being fouled, but either way, VAR urged the referee, Kevin Friend, to look at his screen and then reverse his call.

When Mo Salah was on duty in the Africa Cup of Nations, Fabinho gave the Reds a boost and converted his penalty kick for good and literally ended the game.

To put it mildly, Shearer wasn’t too pleased with the call involving Jota and he made his feelings clear.

“When it was live, I thought ‘the kick is up or he picked the wrong one”, Shearer said. “For the life of me, Kevin Friend and Craig Pawson.

“How the hell did you two come to this ridiculous, wrong, pathetic and stupid decision. Are there any other words you can give me? Can you say I’m angry?

“Our refereeing standards this year are very bad. There are a lot of bad decisions. VAR is really making our referee worse. They are under too much pressure.

“Never. Not a penalty in a million years. How could two so-called experienced referees make a decision that they somehow thought was a penalty. is confusing me.”

Even if Liverpool can still leave Selhurst Park with all 3 points, it still prevents the home team from having the opportunity to get an equalizer in the dying minutes.

Palace were the better side in the second 45 seconds and they will kick themselves to not punish their sloppy opponent in the first half.

Either way, with Salah and Sadio Mane absent, the Reds have secured another win and now they will await their return from the winter break.

Both Senegal and Egypt are still in the AFCON competition and they are going straight to that final, everything is fine.
