The 54-year-old bassist had no idea if anyone else was “interested” in the group Narcissist – whose last headlining shows were in 2015 – so was “really emotional” when told the demand for the huge gig was so be great, a second night would be added.

He told Red Magazine, “You never really know if someone’s going to be interested until you put a show up for sale.” It’s really emotional.

“I’m beyond happy it’s all back and I love them all so much like brothers.”

When not in the band, Alex is busy on the farm where he lives with his wife Claire and their five children, but he admits adjusting between the two very different lifestyles can be difficult.

He laughed: “The last time I went away, I dropped the kids off at school and flew to Mexico City, where there were thousands of people waiting for us at the airport and hotel.

“When we got to the venue – a stadium – it was huge.

“But after that you come home and you have to wash up and the kids say, ‘Dad, stop being shitty.’ “

Blur has recently embarked on a string of warm-up performances, but ahead of their summer shows, which include festival appearances in Spain and France and a headlining gig in Dublin, Alex is hoping to shed some weight by cutting down on his beloved cheese.

He sighed, “I have to get my pants back on. I gained a lot of weight in lockdown.

“Cheers tend to have one shape, bass players have another.”
