Alienware explores eGPU evolution with Concept Polaris

The Alienware community may remember when we launched the Alienware Graphics Amplifier in 2014. This was the time we used the eGPU Gaming (External Graphics Processing Unit). It is praised for its feature set that enhances performance and helps gamers take the graphics performance of their laptops to previously unattainable levels.

As the needs of the gaming community evolve and change, we’re constantly looking at how to deliver unique experiences and take performance to the next level. This can lead to new innovations and exploration of different product categories, or perhaps even rewriting the definition of an existing solution. We believe Concept Polaris is the latter. Concepts like these are just one of the many ways we develop, test, and refine features and solutions. That’s how we create boundaries for performance enthusiasts when we think about the future.

Concept Polaris takes everything we’ve learned about Alienware Graphics Amplifiers from our teams, customers, and communities to build on previous innovation. When designing this concept, we first determined who we would build this with for the core Alienware customer. A performance enthusiast. We’ve also seen a lot of cross-functionality for game creators who will benefit from desktop-grade graphics in their mobile game solutions. And finally, we became aware of where and how people were gaming, knowing that working from home transformed the real estate of the established battle station.

Now, let us take you on a tour of Concept Polaris. Starting from the outside, this iteration of Concept Polaris features a futuristic Alienware Legend 2.0 ID with soft rounded edges, meaningful cable routing, and Alien FX loop lighting. And it can be oriented both vertically and horizontally, making it ideal for those with limited desk space.

For power, we’ve eliminated the built-in power supply and provided power through dual AC adapter solutions. One iteration of the Concept Polaris supplies power through two 330w AC adapters, and in another variant we could use two 425w AC adapters. This allows us to deliver the dedicated power needed for desktop gaming graphics while reducing internal space occupied.

The inside is just as beautiful as the outside. You’ll find that the size of the concept allows for 16-inch full-size desktop gaming graphics cards to be available. This is liquid cooling – of course – with our Cryo-TechTM 240mm cooling solution including our thermal interface material, Element 31. With that type of cooling architecture, pressing pulse your GPU natively with Alienware Command Center to reach its unrealized potential has never been easier.

Accessibility to this experience is also something to consider. Unlike the previous Alienware Graphics Amplifiers, designed for Alienware products, Concept Polaris can provide connectivity via Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB-4, providing performance expansion. desktop gaming graphics for a variety of laptops. Not stopping there, Concept Polaris features USB-A, USB-C and 2.5 GB ethernet ports – which can provide users with a central hub to expand their ecosystem even further.

In a nutshell, Concept Polaris is one of our most recent projects on how we can re-imagine providing even more performance options to gamers and potentially expand the gaming ecosystem. . It’s a device that brings you Legend 2.0’s inspired design in a compact form factor – considering your limited desktop space.

Of course, it is a concept and many of these features and ambitions will evolve and change and perhaps, even the purpose of the device will be redefined. However, we’re not just looking to innovate for the sake of innovation – let us know what you think! We’d love to hear your thoughts on continuing to explore concepts like this in the near future!
