Alison Hammond reveals she joined Big Brother to try to pay off her ‘traumatizing’ debt

Alison Hammond has revealed she applied for Big Brother to try to pay off her “traumatizing” debts.

The This Morning presenter, 47, rose to fame on then-reality show Channel 4 in 2002, proving extremely popular and having had an impressive TV career.

And before heading into the famous flat, when she was facing huge debts of £3,000 in her normal pre-fame job as a holiday agent, Alison recalled thinking it would be a “good idea” to get on the show to go and win the £70,000 prize money.

Speaking to the On Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast, she said: “I was in Tunisia, Repping, and everyone was reading the papers about Brian Dowling – he’d won Big Brother.

“And they said, ‘You should go to Big Brother, you’d win it’.

“And at the time I was about £3,000 in debt and traumatized at the time.”

Alison – who recently celebrated her 20th anniversary on This Morning – detailed her money struggles before her big break at the age of 27, adding: “Every time I got paid I just couldn’t work that debt down.

“So I thought it would be a good idea to win £70,000 on a TV show.”

Despite her gamble, Alison’s gamble didn’t pay off immediately as she missed out on the winner’s £70,000 prize fund and instead received expenses of just £30 a day after spending just two weeks on the show – that of her friend Kate Lawler was won.

Since Big Brother, Alison landed a presenting gig on This Morning, where she was eventually promoted to lead presenter on Fridays with co-host Dermot O’Leary.

She’s also had several other TV appearances including I Can See Your Voice and Strictly Come Dancing, and she also has branding deals with the likes of Crown Bingo and DFS Furnishings.

The change in Alison’s fortune reflected the recent revelation in October that she was wrongly charged £10,000 for servicing her car and failed to realize the money was missing from her bank.

The TV presenter stunned This Morning viewers as she hosted the show on Friday when she explained the garage should have charged her £1,000 but wrongly took an extra £9,000.

Broadcaster Alison said: “I had my car serviced. I paid for the service and only realized when they called me that they had charged me £10,000. I hadn’t checked my balance.

“They noticed it a month later and called me to say they wanted to charge £1,000 but they asked for £10,000 instead.”

Expressing her gratitude for the mechanic’s honesty, she added: “I didn’t even realize it. That was nice of you to tell me.’

The story shocked her co-host Dermot O’Leary and guests Gyles Brandreth and Carol Vorderman, leaving the trio open-mouthed.

Alison recalled her experience just moments after they discussed the cost of living crisis on the ITV show.
