Alleged Covid-19 fraud schemes totaling $150 million result in criminal charges

Federal prosecutors have indicted about 20 people over the past two weeks for alleged involvement in various fraud schemes related to the Covid-19 pandemic, totaling about $150 million in improper government claims, of which about $20 million dollars were paid, officials said.

The indictments come as the Justice Department ramps up efforts to uncover theft from programs that pumped billions of dollars into the healthcare system after the pandemic hit in 2020. The new cases are being filed in counties across the country and provide a full look at how some healthcare providers allegedly attempted to defraud Medicare and other programs by charging fees for unnecessary services — or those that were never provided — with the supply of relatively inexpensive Covid-19 19 tests pooled.
