Although Slate Christmas Day may be interrupted, Adam Silver says NBA ‘No plans’ to pause

Although the Christmas Day schedule may be disrupted, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday the league has “no plans” to pause the season.

On Tuesday, the league told 10 NBA teams whose games are held over Christmas that the date has the potential to reduce the size to just five games, depending on whether COVID-related issues are forced. change the lineup and create holes in the national television schedule or not.

That same day, Silver gave an interview with ESPN, where he said that the league looked at multiple options but found no reason to stop playing.

“Honestly, we’re having a hard time figuring out the logic behind the pause right now,” Silver said. “When we look at these cases that are literally tearing the country apart right now, putting the rest of the world aside, I think we’re finding ourselves where we know we’re coming in the last couple of months – and that’s that this virus won’t go away and we’re going to have to learn to live with it. “

As of Tuesday night, at least 84 players from 20 teams are believed to be under the league’s COVID protocols, a number excluding coaches and staff. However, these numbers change almost hourly, and the current numbers are largely based on what the teams have revealed in their latest injury reports.

League tells teams scheduled for Christmas that priority is to fill ABC window for games on Saturdays, which means slots at 2:30, 5 and 8 p.m. Eastern. For now, those games will, in order, feature Boston at Milwaukee, Golden State at Phoenix, and Brooklyn at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Other games on the Christmas schedule Atlanta in New York at noon Eastern and Dallas in Utah at 10:30pm Eastern. Both of those games are scheduled to show on ESPN.

The league called the concept of changing match time – which can happen if a match is postponed – a contingency plan in a memo distributed to the teams involved and obtained by the Associated Press. Decisions about when a change is needed could come as late as Friday. The league said any decision made on Saturday to postpone a Christmas game would not affect the rest of the day’s schedule.

“There’s no doubt those five Christmas Day games are important,” Silver said. “But as you know, we play many games every day.”

The NBA has postponed seven games so far this season, but not from Wednesday onwards yet. Some of the teams scheduled to play Saturday have plenty of players and coaches in the league’s health and safety regulations right now; The Nets currently have 10 players on that list, which is the highest number known for any team.

The federation is allowing teams to sign tough replacements when a player tests positive for the virus, in the hope that such moves can minimize the need for a postponement.

Other top NBA players were added to the protocol list on Tuesday. Toronto’s Fred VanVleet is currently one of seven players in protocols for the Raptors, but the team – in anticipation of some reinforcements – flew to Chicago on Tuesday in anticipation of Wednesday’s game there against the Bulls.

Also on Tuesday, Atlanta teammates Danilo Gallinari and Clint Capela joined the Hawks roster that already included Trae Young, raising questions about their ability to get ready for Christmas.

Silver told ESPN that a very small number of the league’s current cases involve players or coaches who have undergone the process of three shots – two Pfizer or Moderna shots, then boosters – and those people are mostly asymptomatic or have no worse symptoms than mild symptoms.

Silver said: “The support software is highly effective, adding that the league and the National Basketball Players Association are working to get the league’s 60% boosted player ratio. increased significantly. The NBA has said 97% of players are fully vaccinated.

Silver also says that the Omicron variant has been a “outperform” player in the surge in positive tests in the NBA in recent days, estimating that somewhere around “90% of the positives we’ve seen.” what I’m seeing now is Omicron.”

The league is also “actively considering” changing some protocols and is in regular contact with other leagues, Silver said, about whether there is a way to allow asymptomatic players to enter the floor or at least exit protocols faster than current rules allow or not. . It doesn’t look like a change in policy is imminent.

“We’re comfortable with the protocols we’re following right now,” Silver said.

There were some notable removals from the protocol list on Tuesday. The Lakers said Dwight Howard and Talen Horton-Tucker will be available to play Tuesday night against Phoenix. But Lakers coach Frank Vogel and four players remained absent, all because of protocols.

“Unfortunately, this virus is not going anywhere,” Silver said.
