The long-running singing competition series American Idol had big plans for its 20th anniversary season, culminating in the so-called The Great Idol Reunion episode. meeting reports that many fan favorite finalists are booked to perform.

According to Deadline, the show will air its “Great Idol Reunion” on May 2nd, which will feature finalists Ruben Studdard, Jordin Sparks, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, David Cook, Kris Allen, Laine Hardy, Laci Kaye Booth, Maddie Poppe, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Willie Spence, and Grace Kinstler.

“It’s a testament to the incredible legacy of this show that we’re able to celebrate 20 years of ‘American Idol’ in this extraordinary way,” showrunner and executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick said in a statement. “We are delighted to welcome some of our most beloved alumni from over the years back to the ‘Idol’ stage. ‘American Idol’ continues to create superstars just as it has since 2002, and the return of these idol icons is the perfect way to usher in the next generation.”

This follows American Idol, which welcomed alums Studdard, Sparks, Cook, Alaina, Lee DeWyze and Haley Reinhart as mentors during Hollywood Week, and the new in-house mentors for the Top 24 will be Jimmie Allen and his fellow Bebe Rexha. Allen was in Season 10 of American Idol but was cut during Hollywood Week, while Rexha auditioned once for American Idol and never made it to the judges.

It’s not yet known if the reunion episode will star two of the show’s biggest alumni, Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, both of whom have won multiple Grammys and sold tens of millions of albums worldwide following their stint on American Idol. “

Both ladies have returned to the show over the years to appear for various season finales. Underwood appeared for the Season 10, 15, and 17 finales while Clarkson returned for the Season 6 and 15 finales. So when they’re not busy touring or working on other projects, maybe the show will get them to perform on the 20th anniversary.

Deadline reports that the alumni will perform in pairs: Studdard and Sparks, Alaina and McCreery, Cook and Allen, Hardy and Booth, Poppe and Hutchinson, and Spence and Kinstler.

Studdard was the season two winner and Sparks won season six. Alaina and McCreery took second and first place respectively in Season 10. Cook won season seven and Allen won season eight. Hardy won season 17 and Booth was a top 5 finalist that same season. Poppe won season 16 and Hutchinson came second and the two are together. Spence was the season 19 runner-up and Kinstler was the third-place finisher that same season.

If they manage to get Clarkson and Underwood to sign up, it would be a pretty incredible pairing. Over the years, people have tried to portray the two as some sort of “feud” — rumored to have been Clarkson tied up on the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards red carpet.

Clarkson and Underwood posed together for red carpet photos and then Clarkson narrated “Entertainment Tonight” “Everybody’s always trying to play me and Carrie off against each other. So when I saw her, I was like, ‘You know what? Now let’s just end this and get a picture together because we’re never in the same place. And, like, it never happens. And people are always trying to piece it together like we’re enemies. And I say, ‘We don’t even know each other well enough to be enemies.’ Anyway, I went to take a picture and then everyone went insane.”

“American Idol” is currently in its 20th season. It airs Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific Time on ABC.
