Season 20 of ABC’s “American Idol” premieres Sunday, February 28, 2022, with judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan each returning to the panel.
After the premiere, some fans took to Reddit to call for Perry’s replacement, especially because of the way the judge reacted when Aretha Franklin’s niece, Grace Franklin, auditioned for the show.
During the audition, Perry hit Grace and asked the other judges to give her a chance. In the end, she joked that she was going to quit the show and walk out of the room.
“It’s completely counterproductive in my opinion and quite frankly the show would be better off without that kind of bias,” said one. posted on Reddit read. “I saw Katy get serious and tell the contestants they weren’t ready, what made this so different? She is biased and emotional, sometimes for no other reason than a desire to have her own way. Horrible and heartbreaking”.
Some fans think Perry should leave the show
In replies to the Reddit thread, some fans have called on Perry to leave the show altogether and said they might stop watching because of her “farce”.
“It’s really over the top…” one person agreed.
Another person wrote, “Yes, she is clearly self-centered. I can’t understand why people think she’s good for the show.”
Others compared Perry to Paula Abdul, who was one of the show’s original judges.
“At least Paula was really able to bring out something behind her identical personality,” one answer read. “Katy, no, no, no. Be angry because Lionel Richie was honest. Katy is the immature type if I’m being honest. ”
Others support Perry and replied, “She was just acting that way to make the show interesting. Last night was boring.”
Another replied: “Why would you want to replace her? She really is a modern day Paula. She plays the role we all loved growing up but now that it’s Katy, we give her some crap. ”
Others have criticized all of the judges.
“All three of them act with their emotions too much,” one reply said. “That’s why we need a panel of Simon, Randy, Harry and Keith.”
