America’s Shoplifting Epidemic – WSJ

If you walk into a big city pharmacy these days, you’ll find that most of the goods are in sealed plastic crates. Dishwasher capsules, shaving cream and even shampoo bottles are locked away to reduce shoplifting losses.

Two recent reports show the extent of the theft. Business.org surveyed around 700 small businesses and found that 54% experienced an increase in shoplifting over the past year. 23 percent said it happens every day. The National Retail Federation surveyed 61 medium to large retailers and found that organized retail crime costs an average of more than $700,000 per $1 billion in sales in 2020.
