The HBO adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit title, The Last of Us, sits in the midst of one of the biggest series in television history. After a smashing debut in its first 48 hours, the show continues to hit homes at a devastating pace.
The show’s success is guaranteed as the show’s talented writers have taken the liberty of successfully adapting the show’s material while rewriting the lore points to create a much more cohesive experience. The latest discovery comes from Reddit, as viewers have discovered that Joel’s early dieting habits have enabled him to avoid the root cause of the infection, or rather, his excuse for being on one.
**This post will contain minor spoilers from the first episode of The Last of Us on HBO. If you haven’t seen it yet, please come back when you do. Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.**
At the beginning of the first episode, The Last of Us takes viewers back to the days before the infection in 2003. Joel and Sarah lead normal lives, with the latter reflecting that there is no flour for Joel’s birthday pancakes. The show goes on without this seeming like a big deal. Later, viewers meet the Adlers offering cookies to Joel and Sarah, which Joel politely declines, claiming he is on a diet.
It might not seem like a lot, but refusing the cookies and lack of flour for the birthday pancakes play a bigger part. Assuming food contamination is the cause of the outbreak, the lack of necessary baking ingredients and Joel’s “wrong diet” may have saved Joel and Sarah from infection, apparently.
Again, a moment like this shows the creative liberties the showrunners have taken to make this a much more seamless viewing experience. The Last of Us is currently showing on HBO and HBO Max, and we’ve got plenty of related content below to keep you updated.
