The secret behind the genesis of the pioneers.

In recent years, the dynamic Ice Climbers duo have made their mark in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, from the GameCube version of 2001 to the Ultimate Edition of 2018. But before they arrived in this popular series, the notable protagonists appeared Popo and Nana in other parts dating back to the 80’s where the plot of their debut begins.
While many websites and forums have pointed out that the team’s first appearance was at the 1985 NES launch, Reddit user 2Dement3D has claimed that they actually started out in 1984 with “Vs. Ice Climber.” However, they also mention that it would be strange if the North American arcade version came out before the Japanese release since Nintendo is based in the latter country (information says the Japanese release was in 1985).
So that begs two questions: when did the Ice Climbers first perform and why is there a variance from the original date? First, we can consider how time period affects this theory, as many Reddit users have commented that game start times in the 80’s and mid-90’s weren’t necessarily as great as they are today. Therefore, the reason for mixed theories is that there hasn’t been much data to back up an official claim.
As for the Ice Climbers’ first appearance, the description for the first game on the Nintendo website gives an original release date of October 1985, as well as the Arcade Archives edition. However, it could be that the duo officially debuted with this version. Of course, one could argue that this isn’t true based on the shipping dates, but there isn’t enough information to make that entirely clear.
Whichever side you’re on, the mystery remains unsolved unless someone miraculously digs up old accounts from the games. Nonetheless, there are certainly more curious cases in the Nintendo community with the company’s long history of hidden gems and hit games.
