An Illinois mother was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds after failing to pick up her sons from school

Police investigating the death of a mother of three who was shot multiple times have searched the home of her estranged husband.

Rebecca Bliefnick, 41, was found dead at her home by a family member on February 23 after they were concerned she had not picked up her three children from St. Peter School in Quincy, Illinois.

Officers rushed to a home on Hampshire Street just a mile from Rebecca’s home on Kentucky Road at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Her husband, Tim Bliefnick, 39, lives at the property with several others and the couple are understood to be undergoing divorce proceedings.

Quincy Police confirmed they searched the property and one person was “temporarily arrested” but later released.

They stressed that no arrests had been made in connection with her murder and that they had not produced an arrest warrant.

Rebecca’s estranged husband does not own the searched property and it is unclear who was arrested by police.

Concerned family members sounded the alarm after Rebecca failed to pick up her three sons from school.

Officers called her home at 3:32 p.m. and have since remained on the scene removing evidence from the property.

Police Chief Adam Yates said such violent crime was “rare” in the small town, which is home to just 40,000 people.

A statement from the police department said: “No injuries were reported during the service of the warrant. As part of the warrant, one person was temporarily arrested and released in Block 2000 of Hampshire.

“Intelligence gleaned and evidence gathered over the past six days has led us to this point in our investigation.

“During a criminal investigation, it is not uncommon to receive and serve numerous search warrants for various reasons. Search warrants are a normal part of the investigative process.

Police confirmed they were maintaining an open mind, asking for more witnesses and not excluding anyone as a suspect.

In a statement, Police Chief Yates said the investigation was “difficult” and “takes time” before promising there was “an incredible amount of work being done behind the scenes”.

He added: “The Quincy community has not seen a crime of this magnitude since the beginning of 2019. Every death is tragic; the circumstances of Mrs. Bliefnick’s murder are incomprehensible.

“Our community is shaken, nervous and wants answers. The members of our police department dedicate their lives to protecting the members of our community.

“When a crime like this occurs, it is our job to ensure that justice is done for the victim and that our residents feel safe again.

“We only have one chance to get it right. Mrs. Bliefnick deserves our best and we want to give her that.

“We are fortunate to live in a community where such violent crime is rare. When it happens, it’s devastating.

“Nothing I say here tonight will calm our community. Arrest is the only way to do that in this case. We are working very hard to make this happen. This investigation is our top priority.

“I would like to once again extend my condolences to Ms. Bliefnick’s family and friends. May God be with them, her and the investigators seeking justice for her.’
