Andy Cohen has announced his plans for a massive Real Housewives of New York reboot.
According to Cohen, the reboot will be in two parts and “take into account everything our passionate audience has really told us over the last year.” The plan includes “rebooting and remaking” and then “launching a second RHONY series starring former stars,” the outlet reported.
Cohen says the “first priority” is to fix RHONY as fans know it, and that includes adding a more diverse cast.
“There are thousands of stories to be told here,” he told the outlet. “This is America’s most multicultural, diverse, dynamic and exciting city: we are looking for a multicultural group of friends who truly reflect the most exciting city in the country. We are looking for a group of women who are real friends and who come from different backgrounds, races and religions.”
From there, a second RHONY will be filmed with former cast members. The outlet reported that there’s no official name for the second RHONY just yet, but “Cohen said it’s referred to internally as RHONY: Throwback or RHONY: Legacy.”
Here’s what you need to know:
Andy Cohen didn’t confirm any new cast members, but did talk about the possible return of Bethenny Frankel, Jill Zarin, Eboni K. Williams, Sonja Morgan & Luann by Lesseps
No cast was announced for either show but Cohen told Variety He’s expecting a call from Jill Zarin.
“Jill will be like, ‘Can I get my apple back?'” he told the outlet.
The first show, the reboot, will air on Bravo and the destination for the second has not yet been decided, although “Peacock is an option,” according to the outlet.
Cohen left the door open for Eboni K. Williams to return.
“We’re interviewing several groups of friends,” Cohen told the outlet. “So if Eboni is interested and has friends who would meet our casting goals, then of course they would be considered.”
Cohen says the “loyal fans” have spoken and the second RHONY will feature a cast that is “fan-loved”.
When asked specifically about Sonja Morgan and Luann de Lesseps, Cohen was noncommittal.
“I don’t really want to go into specifics about specific women. Because then it’s like, “Oh, well, he said yes to those two…” The answer is Sonja and Luann were a part of the show — for Luann from the start and for Sonja since Season 3. So I guess, theoretically sure,” he told the outlet.
Cohen says the door is always open for Bethenny Frankel to return, but “I can’t imagine her wanting to do that.”
Andy Cohen says of 2 New Shows, “This is the most exciting casting offer I’ve been a part of”.
The new shows will be a first for the franchise, which has experimented with things like Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.
“You know we’re at a crossroads for RHONY.” Cohen told Variety. “We spent a lot of time figuring out where to go. And the plan we’ve come up with is a real gift to the fans, I think.”
And Cohen is excited about the future.
“I have to tell you that in my nearly 20 years working with Bravo, this is the most exciting casting offer I’ve been a part of,” he told the outlet. “We’re literally looking for who the new ‘Real Housewives of New York City!’ will be! And I think this represents a tremendous opportunity for a rebirth of the show. What we’re looking for is everything that makes a great housewife: funny, headstrong, successful, aspiring women who represent a side of New York that we love more of want to see.”
