Anton Du Beke has revealed how he first met his wife by following her to the toilet at a formal dinner.
The 56-year-old Strictly Come Dancing judge met his wife Hannah, 46, at a golf club in 2011.
Speaking to the That Gaby Roslin Podcast, Anton revealed he didn’t make a good first impression on Hannah back then.
Strange behavior: Anton Du Beke has revealed how he first met his wife by following her to the toilet at a formal dinner
He explained: “Towards the end of dinner she gets up to leave the table and I was like, yeah, here’s my chance, I’ll go and talk to her.
“I never thought about it enough though because when you’re at a dinner like this there’s very little reason to get up and leave the table, I basically followed her to the powder room. Brilliant.
‘She walks in, I’m three steps behind her, I’m walking, ah, while you’re here I might as well walk, so I dove into the men’s room, then I came out of the men’s room, and then I was like, oh , she might have gone back to the table and I missed my chance, should I wait here, she might still be in here, should I ask someone to check – I can’t, it’s ridiculous.
“As I’m thinking about it, she comes out of the bathroom, I’m standing outside the women’s room, she stops and she looks at me and says, ‘Were you waiting for me in the bathroom?’ And I went, could have been, and she says ‘mad’ and walks away.’
Romance: The 56-year-old Strictly Come Dancing judge met his wife Hannah, 46, at a golf club in 2011
However, he managed to win her over and in March 2017 he and Hannah welcomed twins George and Henrietta.
Elsewhere in the chat, Anton spoke about how he defines his career and how comfortable he is with what he’s accomplished.
He said: “I wish I had maybe taken the path of being a little more dramatic artist and maybe more of a serious, classical artist.
Weirdo: Speaking to That Gaby Roslin Podcast, Anton revealed he didn’t make a good first impression on Hannah back then
“Because they’re really held in a little different realm, looked at a little differently than someone who’s in the entertainment world, whenever you’re a performer of any kind, whether you’re a writer, performer, broadcaster, whatever it is, it is all the same
“You’ve all plowed your own path, you’ve peaked, whatever it is, you’re a determined and great artist, but someone valued a little higher for falling under the world of classics, sometimes I have.” the feeling that I wish I had walked this path and experienced a slightly different appreciation.’
He continued: “I have a real problem with the fourth wall, I’m not a fan of it, I don’t like the feel of them and us, sit there while I’m doing this, you have to be amazed because this is serious stuff and it’s going to be you like.
Family: However, he managed to win her over and in March 2017 he and Hannah welcomed twins George and Henrietta (pictured in 2020).
“I’m not a fan of them and us, audience and artist. I’m a lot more cooperative than that and always have been.
“I think I’m influenced by my heroes, they were actually Fred Astaire and Brucie (Bruce Forsyth), they always had this amazing connection with the audience, maybe it’s because they’re dancers.
“So if I’m on stage and I want to do something serious, I can do something and I will do something serious, but at some point I’ll probably do a ridiculous gag or something. Whenever I perform, I have to convey the feeling that we are all in this together.”
Career: Elsewhere in the chat, Anton talked about how he defines his career and how comfortable he is with what he’s accomplished
Anton also addressed his reviewing style at Strictly and how he tries to always be constructive.
He remembered a dance Kym Marsh did with her partner and that night it wasn’t as good as rehearsals.
He said: “I could see that this wasn’t her normal condition, she looked a bit nervous. So I know maybe she only had a fun five minutes, so you can factor that in a bit.
Constructive Criticism: Anton also addressed his reviewing style at Strictly and how he tries to always be constructive
“You still have to judge what you see, but you can understand what’s going on. I can write that in my comments. I like to give people comments that might help them move forward.’
He also spoke about the iconic moment in last season’s Strictly where Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice danced together without music to illustrate what it’s like for Rose to be a deaf person.
Anton gushed, “That moment, there was a moment, you take it out of Strictly and just represent it as a moment, it was a moment in time.
“It could have been on Strictly Come Dancing, it could have been on anything. It was such an amazing, flawless moment captured there forever.
“No matter what we ever do on Strictly Come Dancing, I don’t think anything will ever top that. Everyone will remember it.’
