In response to some online setback Over her white boyfriend, Aoki Lee Simmons claps back and lets the critics know what time it is!
A Valentine’s Day post sparked the conversation
The whole situation unfolded on Valentine’s Day, when Aoki shared a photo that showed her romantically perched on top of a man while posing next to a painterly harp.
She notably didn’t tag her boo, though she captioned the post with a simple heart emoji.
After Aoki Lee Simmons shared her post, people immediately started chiming in. While many supported Aoki’s happiness, others expressed disapproval of her getting cozy with a white man.
Additionally, a quick scroll through the comments section reveals that other people’s backlash is rooted in their speculation that he may be much older than Aoki.
Aoki responds to the backlash, saying it’s “really sad” but “expected.”
Eventually, Aoki hopped on social media to acknowledge and shut down the online naysayers.
Through a now-defunct Instagram Story upload, Simmons initially wrote that she wasn’t surprised by the backlash against her dating a white man, which she described as “really sad.”
In fact, she remarked, “I knew the world was stuck in 1950 and going through some recessionary times [things] to say something as simple as an interracial relationship.” Whoops!

Sure, I guess I knew the world was stuck in 1950 and was going to have some recessionary times [things] to say something as simple as an interracial relationship… It’s really sad, especially for people of color, but it was expected.”
In another upload, the 20-year-old Harvard student said the criticism was “really so terrible”. She also asked, “How is a young person supposed to live a normal, well-adjusted life when this happens?”
“It’s really that awful. How is a young person supposed to live a normal, balanced life when that’s what happens in a Valentine’s Day post without a G*d*mn tag?!
she continued. calling the critics “just appallingly bitter and racist”. However, she was sure to also thank those who take her mentions “overwhelmingly positive.”
“And I had no idea because it’s mild and mostly positive on my side. (Thanks guys for that) but I think outside of the world people I haven’t done anything to or harmed at all are just terribly bitter and racist.”
Aoki ended her message by noting that while she’s “an open person,” she needs to reevaluate what she shares on Instagram.
“Anyway, I have to consider how/if I use this platform and what I share. Which sucks because I’m an open person, but that can’t happen to people I care about.”
