April Fool’s joke or real? Will Smith resigns from the Academy

Will Smith announced his retirement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, but social media users are skeptical about the timing of his decision.

Pressure on the academy to take action against the actor mounted in the days following the drama between him and Chris Rock. The slap left the industry and fans divided.

And now, on April 1, 2022, when news of Will’s retirement broke, people quickly took to Twitter to find out if it was real or an April Fool’s joke.

Will Smith’s resignation isn’t an April Fool’s joke, it’s real

A report from CNN confirms that Will has voluntarily resigned from the Academy.

In a statement shared by his publicist, the actor stated, “I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.”

“Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure I never again allow violence to overtake reason,” he concluded.

What does that mean?

Will’s retirement means he can no longer vote for Oscar-nominated films and performances every year.

But his work will be considered for future Oscar nominations. He still gets to keep his Best Actor award King Richard and will be invited to future ceremonies.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President David Rubin confirmed that the organization had accepted Will’s “immediate resignation.”

In his most recent statement, Will expressed, “I have responded directly to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing and will fully accept any consequences for my conduct.”

“The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone present and the global audience back home. I betrayed the academy’s trust,” he added.
