Bayern legend Oliver Kahn believes Andre Onana will become a world-class goalkeeper, in conversation with PICTURE after the Ajax ace chose Inter Milan against Premier League giants Arsenal.

On the other hand, Onana certainly doesn’t play like one of the ‘top five goalkeepers in the world’ since his return to the starting XI at Ajax after an injury to veteran Remko Pasveer.

The former Barcelona youngster has come under fire after a series of high-profile errors, including a rather huge one in the run-up to Darwin Nunez’s winner in last month’s Champions League defeat by Benfica.

But there’s a reason Scudetto holders Inter have poached Onana to replace the wonderful but aging Samir Handanovic.

There’s a reason the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United all showed interest before the Cameroonian international joined the team Nerazzuri on a pre-contract deal in January (90 mins).

Will Andre Onana be the best goalkeeper in the world?

“Onana is in the top 5 best goalkeepers in the world,” says Kahn.

The CEO of FC Bayern Munich is well placed to make a judgement. Kahn was, after all, one of the best and most feared shotstoppers of his generation.

“(Onana) is agile, fast and powerful,” adds the former German international.

“Onana is also very good with her feet and excellent in structure. He’s sort of a mix of (Barcelona’s) Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and (Liverpool’s) Alisson Becker.

“This man can become the best if he keeps working hard.”

According to Dutch publication NoOnana was ‘very close’ to joining Arsenal in the summer of 2021.

And it’s easy to forget that when the Gunners opted to sign Aaron Ramsdale for an initial $24 million instead, many critics were wondering why on earth they’d brought in a man who’d suffered relegation in each of the last two seasons to commit pounds when Onana was available for a fraction of the price, however, not available for another month due to a doping ban.

Look ahead about nine months and you could certainly make the case for Ramsdale being the Premier League’s ‘signing of the season’.
