Atletico Madrid have reportedly ditched their interest in FC Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto, with the Spain international on Arsenal’s radar ahead of the summer.

According to sports via Barca UniversalThe reigning La Liga champions are keeping a longer eye on the versatile Barcelona star as Roberto’s contract expires at the end of this season and the 30-year-old Catalan is set to leave his boyhood club after 16 years with the European giants.

With a reported release clause €500m (£416m), Barcelona would never come close to matching that fee this summer and given Roberto’s hefty salary, Xavi Hernandez will likely be delighted to see the midfielder finally leave the Camp Nou.

One club who won’t sign the versatile Catalan is Atletico, who appear to have piqued their interest elsewhere, but Arsenal reportedly remain keen on Roberto as the midfielder leaves Barcelona.

ARA reported in February that Mikel Arteta is a fan of Roberto, who can play both in central midfield and at right-back. And Atletico’s latest decision on the Barcelona star could see the Gunners make a move.

Indeed, Roberto oddly fits what Arsenal are looking for this summer as the north Londoners are keen to sign a replacement right-back for Takehiro Tomiyasu, as well as a midfielder to replace Mohamed Elneny and bolster the rankings at that position.

Once called “wonderful”. Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique’s Roberto surprisingly fulfills exactly what Arsenal need as a backup option this summer. However, considering his salary and age, Arteta alone should compel him to stay away from the midfielder this summer.

After all, Arsenal won the transfer window last year after signing young players with high potential, a profile Roberto no longer fits. And although he will be a free agent, the Gunners’ latest free signing at Willian was one of the club’s worst recent signings.
