On Friday it was reported that Premier League trio Arsenal, Leeds and Everton are considering a move for contractless Hoffenheim midfielder Florian Grillitsch – a player Dietmar Hamann said was “technically brilliant”.
Grillitsch, 26, has been a brilliant servant for Hoffenheim in recent years and has made more than 150 appearances. But the Austrian ace’s contract expires in the summer, and a move to England is very likely.
The telegraph report that Arsenal have joined Leeds and Everton in the race to sign Werder Bremen’s ex-husband – who can be signed on a pre-contract basis. Newcastle have been linked with Grillitsch in the past.
Talking to Tribal Football At the beginning of this year, Hamann gave his verdict on Grillitsch. He gushed about his technical ability but wondered if he was physically ready for the Premier League – before proposing to Newcastle.
“He’s a very good technical player, the only question marks over him would be if he would cope with the physicality of the Premier League. Technically very gifted so if he’s in the right system he could definitely help Newcastle.”
Hamann on Grillitsch: Austrians would be a stunning commitment for nothing
Grillitsch would be an excellent signing on a free transfer. A player who has a lot of experience but is still only 26 years old – with more than 200 games under his belt in the senior division. But to continue that momentum, it has to start.
He has his best chances at Everton. The Toffees are likely to bid farewell to Allan, who is an interesting Serie A side. Leeds still have Kalvin Phillips and Arsenal have better chances in the middle of the park.
