Arsenal said on US TV it was “surprising” they have not signed the FA Cup winners

Steven Nicol has claimed he is “surprised” Arsenal have not signed 2021 FA Cup winner Youri Tielemans from Leicester City this summer.

This was announced by the Anfield legend on US television ESPN that Tielemans is someone who would make a “great partnership” with Thomas Partey in the middle of the park for Arsenal.

Tielemans has one year left on his current deal at King Power Stadium, with suggestions he could potentially put a new deal on paper.

If that happens it would be a huge blow to Arsenal as they are desperate to sign the 25-year-old, who scored Leicester’s winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final.

In any case, Nicol is firmly in the camp of Tielemans signing a new contract with the Foxes, although he feels the player has outgrown the club.

“I’m surprised someone like Arsenal didn’t sign him,” said Nicol. “I think he stays at Leicester City. I think he’s better than Leicester to be honest.

“I think Arsenal should have signed this guy. Granit Xhaka is a good Premier League player but I don’t think he’s good enough to push Arsenal into the top 4 or certainly challenge them for a major competition.

“I think Tielemans and Thomas Partey would be a great partnership in the middle of the park. So I’m surprised that Tielemans hasn’t been talked about more, especially from an Arsenal perspective.

“I think you can get him for a decent price now but nobody seems to be going for him, it suggests the top teams aren’t interested which suggests he will stay which is good news Leicester is for him because he’s a good player.”

Tielemans is a player with great technical ability who would be a perfect fit for a possession-based team because he is great at maneuvering the ball in the middle of the park.

He’s also proven he has an eye for goal and can score in the big games for Leicester City.

There is no doubt that a player of the Belgian’s quality should play European football and with Leicester dropping out, a side in Europe should pick him up.

That’s where the likes of Arsenal come in, but perhaps they’ll focus more on other more important signings like Gabriel Jesus before turning their attention to other targets. Arsenal said on US TV it was “surprising” they have not signed the FA Cup winners
