Arsenal suddenly lead the race to sign prolific Newcastle £60m target as Edu starts talks

Arsenal appear to have jumped to the front of the queue ahead of Newcastle United and West Ham United in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

This is reported by the Portuguese newspaper Recordwho claim Arsenal have launched a charm offensive to try to sign Nunez.

Arsenal are now thought to be above Newcastle and West Ham as they stand a greater chance of offering Champions League football.

Nunez has been absolutely outstanding this season, recording 26 goals and two assists in just 33 games for Benfica.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan hitman looks set to be a star and has been endorsed as “world class” by former boss Jorge Jesus.

Arsenal are desperate for a new striker with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract this summer.

You can expect Arsenal to spend big on a new goalscorer this summer and Edu is said to have started talks with Nunez’s representatives.

Arsenal appear to be positioning themselves for Nunez in what would be a major blow to Newcastle and West Ham.

West Ham made an offer to sign Nunez in late January but Benfica refused to sell to the Hammers.

Newcastle are reportedly accelerating their plan to sign Nunez in a deal that could reach £60m.

Newcastle have been heavily linked with Nunez for months and don’t appear ready to drop out of the race just yet.

PIF’s investment means Newcastle are a huge threat in any transfer race and the same goes for Nunez.

Arsenal have shown a willingness to splurge lately and it makes perfect sense to make it big for a new killer like Nunez.

This latest report is very encouraging for Arsenal and could now see Nunez as Edu’s top striker target ahead of the likes of Jonathan David, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Victor Osimhen.
