The telegraph report that Leicester City are ready to approve the sale of midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer for just £25million, with his contract ending in 2023. He has been linked with Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham.
Tielemans, 24, has been a wonderful signing for Leicester since joining the club from Monaco – initially on loan before a £40m deal (Guardian) move permanently. Since then he has made 144 appearances for Leicester.
In that time he’s shifted from holding midfield – having started as a 10 – to becoming a playmaker. He has scored 24 goals and provided 22 assists, including the FA Cup winners against Chelsea in 2021.
90 Minute Report Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham and Chelsea all want to sign the 49-time Belgium international. Now these four sides can land Tielemans for a bargain of £25m – £15m less than when they signed him.
Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham or Chelsea – who is the best match for Tielemans?
You get the impression Tielemans has to play for a club where he knows he’s one of the best players. He shone for Anderlecht and even captained the team as a teenager. He fought at Monaco.
He kind of got caught like a rabbit in the headlights. Tielemans has rebuilt his confidence and career at Leicester – but choosing his next club is crucial. Newcastle would see him as the face of an exciting project.
But Newcastle are under Tielemans at the moment. West Ham would be a solid move, although perhaps going sideways to Leicester. At Chelsea he would struggle to start and lose confidence. Arsenal is ideal.
For any club in European football, £25m for Tielemans is a steal – a player Pep Guardiola branded “top, top class”.
