Artemis: PUBG Creator’s next game will feature NFTs and the Metaverse

PUBG creator Brendan Greene has revealed his next game – a blockchain-based Metaverse title.

During an interview with Hit Points, the 45-year-old game developer revealed that his next game, Artemis, will feature NFTs, the Metaverse, and blockchain.

“[Artemis] will be a platform that we may help maintain,” he explained. “But it’s something that everyone can plug into, and everyone can host a little bit of themselves.”

Artemis will reportedly let players do whatever they want as part of a large, open world. But now it looks like the project will include blockchain.

“I was intrigued by this idea of digital spaces, places where there aren’t really any rules, just a set of systems to use,” Greene explained. “That fascinated me and still does. I never thought about just walking away.”

Blockchain is often touted as a way for players to contribute to the development of a game, but many developers have spoken out against the technology, with Minecraft forbidding the use of NFTs or blockchain outright.

Greene insists Artemis is Not about making money. “It only exists if it’s made for everyone and not for money,” he said. However, he also confirmed that players will be able to derive “value” from their creations by selling in-game items to other players.

Despite the skepticism, Greene says he will continue anyway.

“I’m just going to do what I’m going to do,” he said. “But it doesn’t matter if it’s called the Metaverse. I don’t care what people want to call it.”

Of course, Greene won’t be the first developer to jump into the Metaverse. Bandai Namco recently announced that it has spent a massive $130 million on an upcoming Metaverse project. Not to mention Epic Games and LEGO working together on a kid-safe Metaverse project.

What the Artemis Metaverse will look like remains to be seen. But the addition of NFTs and blockchain sure won’t win over critics.
