Aston Villa want to boost Steven Gerrard’s selection of centre-backs during the January transfer window, despite Napoli’s bid to sign Manchester United loser Axel Tuanzebe.
That’s according to Daily mail, who report Villans will look to add to their defensive count next month. The Birmingham side want to give Gerrard more depth, and may need to replace Tuanzebe in their established plans should he move to Italy.
Napoli are in talks with Manchester United about Tuanzebe transferring Villa Park to Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. However, the Azzurri have yet to reach an agreement with the Red Devils. Even though TuttoMercatoWEB claims that a deal may be imminent.
Napoli also have some alternative targets that could improve Luciano Spalletti’s side next month. The deal for Tuanzebe will be a loan for the remainder of the term and possibly an option to buy. However, Manchester United will want to sell around £25m.
Aston Villa paid Manchester United £4m to sign Tuanzebe on loan in the last transfer window. They also beat Newcastle to a year-long deal with the 24-year-old, but the move was unsuccessful. He has only made 11 appearances so far, with nine in the league.
Aston Villa want to transfer midfielder despite Napoli flirting with Tuanzebe
Tuanzebe landed a role in Dean Smith’s side early on after Napoli targeted a move for Aston Villa from Manchester United in August. He has started six of Villans’ first 11 Premier League games this term. But played only eight minutes in two games under Gerrard.
The former England Under-21 international has also gone five games unused as a substitute since Villa sacked Smith. But he is one of the four most senior centre-backs for Gerrard.
So Aston Villa hope to sign another name in January, despite Napoli’s pursuit of a Manchester United transfer, Tuanzebe. His place in Gerrard’s immediate plans could also become clear on Sunday, with Tyrone Mings unavailable at Brentford due to suspension.
Gerrard confirms plans to strengthen in January
Gerrard confirmed Aston Villa intends to strengthen in the January transfer window during his press conference on Friday. But the Birmingham outfit will only sanction contracts in the mid-season market if they improve the quality already in place.
“We will only sign contracts if we feel they are the right signings for the team and the club,” Gerrard said, via official Aston Villa quote. Twitter Feeding. “We have identified certain individuals that we would like to recommend, and we are actively looking to improve.”
