At least eight people have died when two boats capsized near Blacks Beach, California

At least eight people were killed when two boats collided off the coast of Black’s Beach, California, late Saturday night.

The San Diego Fire Department received a call around 11:30 p.m. from a woman who said she was on a panga boat with 15 people who had made it to shore, but that another boat had capsized and people were inside would have found water.

When crews arrived, they found two overturned panga boats and bodies floating over 400 meters in the water. Life jackets and fuel barrels were also found.

Seven bodies were pulled ashore by lifeguards at the scene and the Border Patrol located the eighth body, according to the SDFD. The bodies were turned over to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

Officers from the SDFD, San Diego Police, Customs Border Protection, U.S. Coast Guard, State Lifeguards, UCSD Police and SDFD Lifeguards responded last night.

It was reported that the lifeguard used GPS coordinates from the woman who called to locate the crash site – which was about half a mile north of the Black Gold Road base.

The crews had to wade into waist-deep water to reach the boats because of the high tide. A panga boat is a type of fishing boat commonly used in the Caribbean and Central America.

Two helicopters were sent up last night to search for victims but the SDFD said conditions were too foggy.

The SDFD will resume recovery efforts on Sunday morning.

They told ABC 10News they hope conditions improve and plan to call in additional crews to help.
