At least five shootings at Morgan State University, Baltimore police say

Baltimore police said they are investigating a shooting situation on the Morgan State University campus. Police said it was no longer an active shooter situation and Morgan State officials said the shelter in place had been lifted and all shuttle services were resuming, according to sister station WBAL. Commissioner Richard Worley said officers responded to the scene around 9:25 p.m. The police quickly located five victims between the ages of 18 and 22, four men and one woman. Each of the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A suspect had not been located at the time of the police press conference. Four of the five victims are Morgan State students. Students said Tuesday night was the Coronation of Miss and Mr. Morgan State University, a popular event held each year during Homecoming week. The shooting occurred not long after that event ended. Wes Moore said his office is monitoring the situation and is in contact with campus officials. “We are grateful for the heroic efforts of the first responders who rushed to the scene and are actively working to ensure safety,” Moore said on social media. The university, which enrolls about 9,000 students, was founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute, with the original mission of training men for the ministry, its website says. According to Associated Press reports, it moved to its current location in Northeast Baltimore in 1917 and was purchased by the state of Maryland in 1939 to provide more opportunities for black citizens. Police said it was no longer an active shooter situation, and Morgan State officials said protective measures had been lifted and all shuttle services would resume.
In a news conference early Wednesday morning, Baltimore police said at least five people had been shot and that at least four of those victims were Morgan State students. According to investigators, the victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Early in the investigation, police told sister station WBAL that the suspected shooter had fled into a dorm building and that police were working to clear the dorm and arrest the suspect.
The school said people should stay away from the area around Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center and shelter in place.
The shooting occurred during a week of activities leading up to the school’s homecoming game, scheduled for Saturday. Students said Tuesday night was the Coronation of Miss and Mr. Morgan State University, a popular event held each year during Homecoming week. The shooting occurred not long after that event ended.

City Council member Odette Ramos said on X that students and staff were ordered to shelter in place.
A local resident, Ish Sargent, 20, said she and her friends didn’t hear any shots but came outside when they heard a helicopter circling overhead. Sargent said she doesn’t typically worry about gun violence in the area.
“It’s crazy at a school, though,” she said. “People out here are shooting.”
