In 2017, August Alsina shared that he had a severe autoimmune disease that was affecting his liver. The genetic condition has led to several incidents, including a collapse on stage in 2014.
He revealed his illness in a 2017 episode Conversation at the Red Table with Jada Pinkett Smith, with whom he was controversially “involved”.
He clarified that his family has a history of autoimmune diseases. The Song Cry singer said in the video: “My father’s mother and sister revealed that illnesses run in my family after we sat down and talked. Both my grandfather and my father died from serious illnesses.”
On July 8, 2019, he offered additional health updates. The rapper explained why he was hospitalized in a video he posted to Instagram, saying it was due to a loss of movement.
“We run a battery of tests and they say I have some nerve damage throughout my body,” he said.

Genetic liver disorders include alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, hemochromatosis, and Wilson’s disease. You suffer from it because of not enough AAT protein, too much iron, or a build-up of copper.
These diseases can cause multiple complications not only in the liver but also in other organs. Symptoms can include fatigue, abdominal pain, joint pain, loss of libido, fibrosis, and cirrhosis.
His ailing health could be why Alsina announced on September 20, 2021 that his latest project would likely be his “last,” suggesting he’s retiring.
