Australian leader sets election in May as inflation concerns mount

SYDNEY – Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison called for snap elections in May, marking the official start of a race increasingly focused on inflation concerns plaguing governments around the world.

In the May 21 election, Mr Morrison and his centre-right coalition government, which includes Mr Morrison’s Liberal Party and the right-wing Nationals, will face the centre-left Labor Party led by Anton Albanese. Mr Albanese began his campaign on Sunday by discussing how his plans for cheaper childcare and better-paying jobs will ease the pressure on the cost of living, while Mr Morrison highlighted his government’s efforts to save jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic and Lower taxes.
