‘Bachelor’ Star Reveals the Unusual Food Combo He’s Eating

Zach Shallcross, the lead actor of “The Bachelor,” has revealed an unusual food preference.

The show revealed during the week of March 13, 2023 that Shallcross likes to have mustard with his pancakes.

It turns out he’s actually eaten one or the other meal combo before and talked about it during an interview. Since the reveal came during Hometown Dates Week, stop reading if you don’t want to get spoilers for the episode.

In an end credits scene, Shallcross told contestant Gabi Elnicki that he was eating pancakes with mustard. She then told him she had never tried mustard or ranch dressing, which seemed to surprise him.

The revelation came during a date in the hometown. In the end, Elnicki was one of three women who made it through to the next round, so her lack of interest in mustard doesn’t seem to have hurt her chances.

There are a few recipes online that include mustard in pancakes, but they often suggest adding it to the pancake mix rather than smearing it on top. For example, this recipe from Boss Kitchen demands to add some mustard to the pancakes.

Reader’s Digest Canada has also published a recipe that involves adding some whole grain mustard to the pancake batter.

A Pinterest user shared a photo of mustard on pancakes in 2015 and captioned the image, “Pancakes with mustard on them. What a great way to wake up your taste buds in the morning!!!”

Shallcross first revealed the mustard pancake combo to Jennifer Hudson in 2022 in their broadcast“The Jennifer Hudson Show”.

“What is one weird food combination you like?” Hudson asked Shallcross, according to Parade.

“Okay, so, I have a really weird food combo, and I hear you do too,” Shallcross said, Parade reported.

When she asked him what “he’s got,” Shallcross told her, according to Parade, “I grew up — from my grandma teaching us — to put mustard on pancakes.”

According to Parade, Hudson explained that she found the flavor combination odd, but Shallcross told her he likes the combination of sweet and savory.

“It’s like an odd thing where it’s sweet and savory … on a pancake,” he said, according to Parade.

“So you’ve got the syrup and mustard on the pancake,” Hudson asked, according to Parade.

“I don’t do it daily or anything,” Shallcross told her, the magazine reported. “But I did that a few times as a kid, yeah.”
