As part of Sony’s State of Play on February 23rd, developer and publisher Larian Studios announced a full release date (and new platform) for the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3.
The long-awaited RPG will be fully released on August 31, 2023. Originally planned only for PC and Mac, State of Play also confirmed that the game will be available for PlayStation 5 on the same day in August.
The announcement coincided with a brand new trailer, offering viewers multiple snippets of gameplay, a demonstration of the character customizations on offer, and glimpses of the main players in the game’s storyline.
Set in the Dungeons & Dragons setting of the Forgotten Realms, Baldur’s Gate 3 was originally released as an Early Access title in October 2020 and has since received regular content and experience fine-tuning. The last major update was December’s Holy Knight patch, which added the Paladin class, increased the level cap, and introduced new gameplay systems.
Given its status as a sequel to BioWare-developed (and hugely popular) Baldur’s Gate 2, which is now considered a classic turn-of-the-century RPG, it also has some pretty big shoes to fill. If you’d like to check out the new trailer, you can do so in full below. Of note is the voice-over work by none other than actor JK Simmons, who will take on the role of General Ketheric Thorm.
